Victorian Mistress! Unworn 1900s Silk Slip or Night Dress with Garters Sz-38 (#1487)
This wonderful garment dates from the early 1900s, and it is in the most-marvelous condition for its 100-plus years of age! This is one of Richard’s museum-quality rarities in the New Jersey ‘HQ’ of Silver Screen Loungerie. You will find this beauty in the “Bridal Trousseau” and “Richard’s Collection” departments.
We at Silver Screen Loungerie, are dedicated to offering vintage lingerie items of the highest quality possible. While we sometimes find the occasional new/old stock piece – like this one, most of our items have been gently worn by just one previous owner.
Although this slip or under-dress is easily 100 years old, we’re amazed by how well the garment has been preserved. The fabric is a thin silk charmeuse, and it is completely free of stains and/or pinholes. The silk ribbon straps are pale-pink on the outside – pale-gold on the underside, and they are not fractured or deteriorating.
In the upper part of this slip-gown, the details are amazing! There is a crocheted panel in the upper front… below that is a panel with tight and precise pin-tucking. The garment was originally designed to be a floor length slip-gown, but the dressmaker turned up the lower skirt, so the bottom of the garment is now at the upper-calf level. The original hem is now hand-stitched in place just below the waist point. This hand-stitching was done with narrow-gauge silk thread, so with extreme care, these threads could be snipped, and the gown let out to its original 68-inch length. (After hand-laundering, the old stitch-line would be almost invisible.) Two garters are included with the gown.
As with almost all of these early silk lingerie garments, they were designed to hang loosely from the shoulders with no crosswise waist seam or other shaping. Everything that could be done to enhance the beauty of this gown, was actually done! It’s a most precious gown, and it’s ready to wear and fit for a star – YOU – the Leading Victorian Lady of your Life!
